In a rush?

What shall I do for [fill in name as appropriate]’s present..? Ah! I’ll knit [him/her/it/delete as appropriate] something! …Oh, but it’s quite soon…I won’t have time –

Stop right there.

There is a way to hack into a project and make it shorter.

If you’ve been to your nearest yarn shop (if you haven’t, do it) you will notice that alongside the sensible worsted and double knits, there is a chunky shelf. This is my favourite shelf.

If you are knitting in a rush, grab yourself a few balls of the super chunky stuff and knit your gift in under twice the time. Just make sure you have needles that are anything larger than 8mm to knit it with.

See for yourself! These are both three rows:

Chunky and super chunky is often a little more expensive than normal wool – but if you’re really in a rush it’s worth that extra few [pounds/dollars/insert appropriate currency] to knock-up a very special gift.
